Choosing the wrong rug size is the most common regret in home decorating — and the easiest one to avoid. A rug that's too small makes a room feel cramped and disconnected, no matter how beautiful the design is.

This guide gives you exact dimensions in both centimetres and feet, room by room, so you can order with confidence the first time.

Living room rug sizes

There are three accepted layouts. Pick the one that matches your space and budget.

1. All legs on (most luxurious). Every piece of furniture sits fully on the rug. You'll usually need 200×300 cm (6.6×9.9 ft) or larger. This makes a room feel intentional and expensive.

2. Front legs on (most common). Only the front legs of your sofa and chairs rest on the rug. 160×230 cm (5.25×7.55 ft) works for most standard living rooms. This is the best balance of cost and effect.

3. Floating (smallest). The rug sits in front of the sofa without touching furniture. Use 140×200 cm (4.6×6.6 ft) — but be careful: floating rugs can look undersized in a large room.

Rule of thumb: leave 30–45 cm (12–18 in) of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. That border is what makes a room look finished.

Bedroom rug sizes

The goal is simple: your feet should land on softness when you get out of bed.

• Single / twin bed: 140×200 cm (4.6×6.6 ft) placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed
• Double / queen bed: 160×230 cm (5.25×7.55 ft) — extends roughly 45–60 cm past each side
• King bed: 200×300 cm (6.6×9.9 ft) for full coverage around three sides
• Budget alternative: two runners (80×200 cm) on either side of the bed, or one at the foot

Position the rug so it starts just below the nightstands, covering the bottom two-thirds of the bed.

Kitchen and hallway runners

Runner rugs are the most underrated size — they solve the areas that get dirtiest.

Hallways: leave 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of visible floor on each side. For most corridors that means a runner 70–80 cm wide. Length should stop about 30 cm short of doorways at each end.

Kitchen: a runner in front of the sink and counter run absorbs the heaviest spills. If your kitchen is galley-style, one long runner down the centre works better than two small mats.

Entryway: 60×90 cm or 80×120 cm catches outdoor dirt before it travels through the house.

Because these areas take the most abuse, this is where a machine-washable rug matters most.

Kids' rooms and play areas

Children sit and play directly on the floor, so coverage matters more than furniture placement.

• Play area: 140×200 cm (4.6×6.6 ft) gives enough open space for building and playing
• Nursery: 160×230 cm (5.25×7.55 ft) covers the area around the crib and changing table
• Shared or larger room: 200×300 cm (6.6×9.9 ft)

Prioritise a non-slip backing here — it's a safety issue, not just a convenience one.

Dining room rug sizes

The critical rule: the rug must extend at least 60 cm (24 in) beyond the table on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

• 4-seat table: 160×230 cm (5.25×7.55 ft)
• 6-seat table: 200×300 cm (6.6×9.9 ft)
• 8-seat table: 200×350 cm (6.6×11.5 ft) or larger

How to measure before you order

1. Measure the room — length and width in centimetres.
2. Mark the rug outline on the floor with painter's tape or newspaper. This is the single most useful thing you can do — it shows you the real footprint before you commit.
3. Check your walkways. Doors need clearance, and traffic paths shouldn't cut across a rug corner.
4. Decide your furniture layout (all legs on / front legs on / floating) before choosing the size.
5. Round up, not down. When you're between two sizes, the larger one almost always looks better.

Common sizing mistakes

Buying too small. By far the most frequent error. A small rug makes furniture look like it's floating in an unfinished room.

Matching the rug to the room exactly. Wall-to-wall coverage removes the border that frames the space. Always leave visible floor.

Forgetting door clearance. Measure the gap under doors that swing over the rug area — a 12 mm pile needs about 15 mm of clearance.

Ignoring the pull-out space at dining tables. If chairs catch the rug edge when pushed back, the rug is too small.
